THE Arafura Games will never return to the Territory, Chief Minister Adam Giles has confirmed.

Mr Giles today said the NT Government’s new initiative Festivals NT will replace the long-running sports event with our Asian neighbours.

“The Arafura Games had its day – it was a model of a complete sporting package for moving into Asia,” he said.

“For us this is about saying sport is one element – it’s not a holistic sporting package. Single events are the way we want to pursue sporting elements into Asia but we also want to look at other elements such as culture and business.”

The Arafura Games originally began in 1991 and were designed to bring together 30 Asia-Pacific countries to compete in Darwin in 23 sports.

It was put indefinitely on hold in 2012.
