The master pie makers at Pinjarra Bakery are celebrating after their chunky pie was named the best plain pie, at the 2021 Great Aussie Pie Competition.

This is the second time Pinjarra bakery has won the award, previously in 2019.

Pinjarra Bakery says its taken 2 decades to create its award-winning recipe.

“(Last time we won) we had people coming from all over Western Australia to try a pie, people ringing up to try to get pies sent over east. The word gets out and people are pretty keen to give it a try.”

It’s official, WA knows how to pie.

The master pie makers at Pinjarra Bakery are celebrating after they once again etched their names into the record books, taking out the nation’s top honour after their chunky pie was named the best plain pie at the 2021 Great Aussie Pie Competition.

It’s not the first time the bakery has reached the dizzying heights of pie success. Bakers Paul Pantaleo and Darren Rowe also teamed up in 2019 to take the title.

“It’s a massive thing, this is probably the most prestigious award in the baking game, and to be named the best pie in Australia there’s not a much better accolade you can get. It means the world to us and we hope people can come and try one of these amazing pies and hopefully they enjoy it,” Mr Pantaleo said.

And, aside from the honour, winning the title is also good for business.

“(Last time we won) we had people coming from all over Western Australia to try a pie, people ringing up to try to get pies sent over east. The word gets out and people are pretty keen to give it a try.”

Mr Pantaleo said it had taken nearly 20 years for Pinjarra Bakery to perfect its recipe into award-winning contention.

So, what makes the ultimate pie?

Mr Pantaleo says it’s all about good quality ingredients, a dry bottom – nobody likes soggy pastry – a crispy puff pastry top, and a tasty filling that isn’t too runny.

But it’s not just the plain pies that get the tastebuds going at Pinjarra Bakery. Their talented bakers are also masters of invention, with the drool-inducing beef brisket with Mac and Cheese taking out the slow cooked BBQ pie category at last year’s awards.

The beef – slow cooked for eight hours – is layered with onions and cheddar and parmesan infused macaroni and is a must try for any pie aficionado.

Pinjarra Bakery, which has four stores and pumps out up to 2000 pies a day, wasn’t the only top WA contender at this year’s awards, with a number of others named category winners.
