The Fremantle Arts Centre has taken another step to help ensure career pathways for local artists remain bright and prosperous.

The centre was awarded a $100,000 grant from the Australia Council for the Arts to implement a new initiative called Groundwork which will give six local artists studio space and a weekly wage for three months.

The artists will use the opportunity later this year to create new work, develop a business and engage in critical response and review.

Fremantle Arts Centre director Anna Reece said Groundwork has been developed in response to a “significant gap” within the State’s arts sector to help support and nurture WA artists.

“As a creative campus committed to fostering a community of innovation and collaboration, Groundwork harnesses FAC’s existing activities to offer a cohesive and accessible program that maximises opportunity and impact — empowering practitioners and providing them, with the resources they require to embrace risk and engage in rigour in their practice,” Ms Reece said.

“We are truly grateful to the Australia Council for the Arts for this grant enabling us to appropriately and strategically support our cultural ecology.”

The initiative is open to all practising, emerging and mid-career artists working in a range of artistic disciplines. Applications close on April 29.
